That's right! It's that time again: New month, new calander, new resolutions, new year! It's been a year full of surprises, adventures, and great manga ^_^

My New Year's Resolutions:
  1. Buy more manga!

  3. Get better at Japanese (study, study, study!)
  4. Ride my bike more often (clean air and all that ^_^)
Now's your chance: What are your new year's resolutions? Don't be shy, I know you have them. Is it to read the entire Fruit's Basket series from start to finish? Kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
I look forward to our continued relationship over this year!

Learn Japanese - FREE!

As a fan of Japanese culture there are several blogs, podcasts, and sites I like to visit on a regular basis. One of my top favorites would have to be Tofugu.com (and with their witty humar, why not?). Well, I've been a bit behind on my feeds lately and only just stumbled upon this today. It's their to 10 picks for online resources to help you learn Japanese. And to top that, 39 free Japanese courses you can take through edufire.com. How cool is that? Free lessens and helpful resources. Those guys rock!

Ok, so maybe you won't be able to learn ALL Japanese from just these resources, but it's a great start while school is out. Go on over and check them out. If you have any interest in learning a new language, Japanese would be a great one. Maybe then you'll know what Otaku means ;-)

*Yes, I know most of you know what Otaku means. I only used it for example!

Merry Christmas from GPManga!

メリークリスマス - Marii Kurisumasu!

I just wanted to post and wish you all a Merry Christmas.

GPManga will be taking the rest of winter off to get the new site uploaded and spiffy. Feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions or suggestions. We will definitely be checking our emails ^_^

In the mean time, here's a Christmas video complements of Youtube and Tofugu.com!

The Music of Vampire Knight

For those of you DIEING for the Vampire Knight anime to be released in English, I have a treat for you. Ok, not so much as a treat but an appetizer: the tantalizing and haunting music of Vampire Knight. The opening theme, "Futatsu no Kodou to Akai Tsumi" by On/Off, and the ending theme "Still Doll" by Kanon Wakeshima--this one is my fave!.

The single for both these songs is available at Amazon.com, but I really don't know anybody who would want to spend $13 on a single...

Enjoy!

The problem with our server has finally been fixed and I'm happy to say that after a through update our URL will point to the new site! *squee!* So keep your eyes here for updates. I'm expecting the new site to go live January 1st. Talk about a New Years gift ^_^

Also, I've been gathering up extra goodies for the promo bags, so those of you who are in the manga, anime, or light-novel business who may have promo goodies, feel free to send me an email and I'll send you our address. Goody bags will still be $1.75 or an SASE with $1.50 in postage. More info will be posted on the new site.

In other news I've been watching The Twelve Kingdoms again. I really love this anime as well as the light-novels. If you haven't read or seen it yet, put it on your wish-list!

Well, I'm off to my local library. Happy reading!

RIP Broccoli Books

As of January 2009, Broccoli Books will cease publication. Sad, sad news, I know! Broccoli books is the publisher of Digi Charat, Galaxy Anngel, Disgaea, the oh-so cute Koi Cupid, and Murder Princess.

A huge ((hug)) to the Broccoli staff and to you readers who will miss out on all their wonderful publications. If you would like to send the Broccoli Books staff your condolences, head on over to the Broccoli Books blog and leave them a message. I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

Ahh!!

Yes, aahhh!! I know I've been supper bad not keeping you guys updated on the site progress—or listing the last couple month's new release lists—and my only excuse is that I'm lazy. Well, no, I take that back. I have lots of excuses: the computer is still not working right and I can't afford to fix it so I'm stuck on the laptop—which is supper slow; I've been doing lots and lots of yard work so the new puppy has some where to stay during the days; and I've been so gosh-darn busy getting the site back up that I really haven't had time for much else.

Yes, see? Lots of excuses but it all boils down to that one. I guess. But don't worry, the site is nearly operational! I only have a few more bugs to work out of the system then you will all have free reign. No contests are planed at this time, but you never know what might happen between now and then.

And I have a load of reviews for you! From Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger—which was horrible!—to Yaya Sakuragi's Tea for Two—which wasn't half bad—there will be loads of manga to add to your holiday wish list.

In the mean time, happy reading,
Amber

Testing Ping

This is a ping test. Please ignore.

FUNimation Acquirs Anime BACCANO!

FUNimation has acquired the anime rendition of Ryohgo Narita's light novel series BACCANO! The series, set in 1930's prohibition America, is a compilation of several unrelated story lines that criss-cross each other but focus mainly on 'the hostage crises' aboard The Flying Pussyfoot. Classic mafias, speakeasies, immortals and alchemy. What's not to love?

Luckily for us, FUNimation has posted the first episode on their web page. For those of you who don't have patience to discover it yourself, the password is FLYINGPUSSYFOOT. What are you waiting for? Go check it out!

No news on whether-or-not the light novels will be translated into English or not, though.

No More New Releases?!

Ok, I am not announcing that every publisher has quit publication or that there are no new releases this month. If I where, I doubt my eyes would be dry enough to see what I'm writing and you'd get a post full of much and letters (kinda like those IMs or Tweets you get when my cat decides to post). I'm just here to let you know that while the site is down and my computer is out for the count, I will not be able to post the new releases each month.

I'm hopping to get everything set to rights ASAP, so in the mean time: fingers crossed!

Once again I'm so far behind in posting this that it's not even funny! So I'm just going to come out and post them. No links. No comments. No prettiness. Nothing.

Er, please don't hate me!

I happen to be addictid to JDramas so when I found out about this I just had to pass it along. It seams that the classic shoujo manga Here Is Greenwood, which is currently being released in the US by VIZ, is to become a live action drama in Japan.

Kazuya is in love. Unfortunately the woman he's in love with has just recently married his brother! When he finds out that she's to live with them, he makes a decision: to stay at the high-school dorm known as Greenwood. But Greenwood has a few surprises of it's own.

Now, for those of you who are not a big fan of live-action or forking over a hefty amount of cash for a multi-region DVD player, Here Is Greenwood is also available as a anime through Anime Works. Originally released in the US in the 90's on VHS, Anime Works has since re-released the series on DVD.

FUNimation Acquires Romeo x Juliet

According to a recent press release, FUNimation has acquired the epic futuristic romance Romeo x Juliet. A new twist to Shakespear's tragic romance, with some other Shakespearean classics thrown in for good measure, this series spans 24 episodes and will be released in two 12 episode collections, one in spring and the other in summer of 2009.

The story tells of Juliet, the last remaining member of the Capulet family, who has been hidden within the city of Neo Verona after escaping a vicious raid against her family by Duke Montaque. Growing up under the oppressive reign of King Montague, unaware of neither her past nor her true lineage, Juliet realizes the cruelty placed upon the people by the king and takes action. Donning a red cape and mask she becomes the Scarlet Whirlwind and fights to right the wrongs placed upon the people under King Montague's reign. It is while in this guise that she comes across Romeo Montague, only son and heir to the throne. This is the tale of star-crossed lovers and the forces that strive to keep them apart.

The manga version of the story has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Aasuka shoujo magazine and it was also made in to an online radio series known as RomejulixRadio. More info coming soon!

{The official Japanese home page}

Yes, like usual, I am late posting the new releases for this month. Please, please forgive me! I'll just jump right in with the new releases. Blabber stopped.

The dates listed below are those taken directly from the publisher's website and may change without notice. And as always the list below is compiled of select titles and does not include every manga, manhwa, or manhua released. Really, that would be a long list and we just don't have that much time on our hands!

NOTICE: er, ok, maybe not a 'notice' but just a heads up. Click on the letter(s) to visit that title's page on Amazon or Barns and Noble. All linked titles now go to our review on our page.

Venus in Love

I am not joking here people! If you have not read a single volume of this hit manga, get your booties over to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy (hey, if you can afford it, pick up all 4 copies!!). I quite literally stayed up until 1am reading this sucker (er, no pun intended).

This Gothic tale of vampires and blood takes place at Cross Academy, where Chairman Cross has created two different class of students: the Day Class-filled with your average high school student-and the Night Class-filled with good-looking vampires. It is his belief, and hope, that the combined campus can create a better relationship and greater understanding between humans and vampires. Of course the vampires' presence on campus is to be kept a secret from the humans and to help protect this secret are Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu, Prefects. It is their job to ensure the safety of the Day Class and the anonymity of the Night Class.

But Zero would like nothing better than to see the vampires extinguished. On top of having come from a long line of vampire hunters, his parents where murdered four years prior by the beasts they hunted and he, himself, was bitten. He feels nothing but hatred and disgust towards them. Yuki, on the other hand, believes there are good vampires just like there are bad vampires. Her own earliest memories of being saved by a vampire from a vampire prove this. What's more, her rescuer, Kaname Kuran, is the dorm leader of the Night Class. An obvious love triangle if I've ever seen one!

Seriously folks. If you have a love for a very well plotted, well paced, action packed, heart-pounding, Gothic tale, pick this up. I would have to admit that the art work isn't top notch (namely the characters with their expressionless eyes and faces-which I am happy to say improve as the story progresses) but Matsuri Hino has done a fantastic job of creating a Gothic setting. From the school's architecture and uniforms, to the Victorian roses and scroll work, this is one manga that accurately illustrates the tone.

Now, just a warning. There are currently only 4 volumes available in English and 7 published in Japanese with an estimated 10 volumes total. The story is currently running in LaLa Magazine (one more reason to learn Japanese: chapter 39 is now out!) as well as Shojo Beat Magazine here in America. Also, as of April 7th, the official anime version has aired in Japan with 4 of the 26 episodes already shown. I would guess that it would be available to us in English sometime around winter of '09 or spring of 2010 (why so long?!) no doubt released by VIZ Media. There's also a novel based on Aidou (one of the characters from the main story) that has been published in Japan. Bets that VIZ picks this one up, too? Gods, I hope so!

Here are some links for you: The Official VIZ Vampire Knight page, The Official Anime website (Japanese), and as a special treat...

The official anime trailer!!
er... yes, it's subbed...

Now, what to read?! I knew there was a reason I never started a series until all volumes where out. *sniff, sniff* Please excuse me, I'm going to cry myself to sleep and dream of yummy vampires...

VIZ Media's Redesiged Store

We all love goodies, right? As if I even need to ask that! Well, it looks as if VIZ media has updated their online store and right now they're offering goodies! Namely a special BLEACH or NARUTO Mystery Box with one of five different colorful 2½ inch collectible figures from the shows. All you have to to is spend $25 (and if you're like me, that's the easy part!). On top of their huge selection of manga and DVDs, they also offer some cute clothing and accessories. Ok, I admit that the majority of it is Naruto stuff, but some digging pulled up this cute T from Marchen Awakens Romance.

Now, there isn't really allot of stuff for us shoujo fans, but dig in and keep your eyes on them, they may surprise us someday! Also it looks like their navigation isn't 100% which can be really annoying, but don't let that put you off! Check it out for yourselves.

I've included the official press release for anyone who'd like to read it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Web Boutique Offers Extensive Collection Of Products Based On Popular Anime And Manga Properties
Including BLEACH, NARUTO AND DEATH NOTE

San Francisco, CA, April 29, 2008 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry's most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has redesigned its official online store at http://store.viz.com.

The new outlet, which is an extension of the VIZ Media corporate website, is easier to navigate and features quick search tools to access a wide selection of products for some of the company’s most popular anime and manga properties including BLEACH, NARUTO and DEATH NOTE. Also featured are an increasing variety of special store exclusives that include NARUTO backpacks, limited edition BLEACH skate/street shoes by T.U.K., a NARUTO hooded sweatshirt design exclusively offered by the VIZ Media online store, DEATH NOTE messenger bags, and DVDs, manga volumes, magazines, and other toys, collectables and video games based on popular titles.

Currently VIZ Media is offering a special BLEACH or NARUTO Mystery Box, with any purchase over $25. Both series includes five different colorful 2½ inch collectable figures from the hit program, each offered separately and packaged in special mystery boxes. The store will be updated regularly with other new and exclusive items.

“The new VIZ Media online store will make it easier than ever for fans to browse an extensive collection of products,” says David Rewalt, Senior Director of Retail Development at VIZ Media. “The web is now one of the most utilized channels for fans to buy the latest anime and manga and related items, and the new VIZ Media online store will become a bookmarked and regularly visited outlet for casual as well as die-hard fans. We invite everyone to take a look and see some of the newest and most unique new products offered.”

"Ok, ok, wait a second! You didn't include a link to Marchen Awakens Romance! What the heck?!" Yah, I know. My bad! I don't really know anything about the show other than that. It's a show. I know you can buy the DVDs through Amazon (or at least you could when I looked) but they're sold through individual sellers and I don't like to promote that. Sure, buying from somebody is fine, but if you don't buy from the company, the author or artist doesn't get paid, so they don't make the bills, so they have to find another job and they stop creating the things you love!! *huf, huf, huf* Ok, I'm done. Please support your favorite manga-ka, artiest, author, or company by buying something from them every once in a while.

Manga and Sunday Salon...

-----------
This has been cross posted from my personal blog,
Bits of Amber, because I thought you all might like to read it. No making fun! Find out more about The Sunday Salon.
----------------

Manga and Sunday Salon...

... a good combination? I think so (of course, manga and anything is a good combination. Especially manga and iced mochas!). If you haven't read a manga yet, do so! They are so very addicting it's scary. As of right now I'm reading Absolute Boyfriend ( 絶対彼氏 Zettai Kareshi) by Yuu Watase and it's a keeper! The art isn't the very greatest (it's like everything else out there, I would say) but I like it, and sometimes it's hard to tell one male character apart from another, but the story line, characters, and hilarity are just too intriguing and fun!

Absolute Boyfriend is the story of an average high school girl who, for the life of her, can not get a boyfriend. Honestly, the poor girl is like an anti-boyfriend magnet! It is hinted (ok, bashed upon us) that the reason she can't attract a boy is because of her rather small chest size (let me warn you now, this manga does... insinuate quite a lot and is rated 16+). So what does she do? She orders one on a trial basis. If she fails to return him in 3 days she'll have to pay 100 million yen (roughly 1 million bucks!). Ouch. You know what happens, right? You guessed it; she keeps him. So how does that work? She has a robotic boyfriend living in her apartment, still has to attend school, oh, and did I mention an old school friend who has had a crush on her forever is living next door! What happens? You'll just have to read it and find out.

So far I've enjoyed vol 1 and 2, vol 3 was a bit repetitive for my tastes ("Have sex! Have sex! Let's have sex!!") but the story was saved in vol 4 by a new twist. Vol 6 is a kicker, folks, so brink a hankie (and if you're like me, buy it last!!). (Oh, BTW, Thank you NIKI for letting me barrow that one. How you got it before it's release, I'll ever know!!)

Now, I'm off! If you have any questions about it, just ask. Happy reading all.

Yes, yes, yes! The covers link to the amazon store so you can check out each volume and perhaps buy it ^_^ Come on, I know you want too!! Besides, if you don't you wont read a great story and I wont get payed!
